Engage their Minds

GREAT MINDS DON'T THINK ALIKE

Learning to read and write is a necessity in our lives.  We all know that.

However, what we learn while reading and writing matters a great deal.  Reading can change our minds, as well as our hearts.

The power in written words can transform our thinking and can empower us to be more than we ever dreamed.

DRIVING QUESTION:

How can we use our growing reading and writing skills + what we're learning about citizenship to impact our community for good?

Skyping with  3rd graders across town to learn about their ideas.

Students decided to write letters, encouraging our community to work together to make our area even better!

Copying our letters for the community walk.

Individualized Phonics Support

Students exhibiting reading accuracy/phonics deficits receive 30 minutes per day, 4 times per week of Sonday System II instruction.

Written by Arlene Sonday, past president of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), this program is based on the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading.

Teaching child HOW to read is vital, and a significant piece of accomplishing that is to instill WHY it's important.  When young children use their growing reading skills to impact the world around them - that is powerful!ly motivating!

Along with the Orton Gillingham program, Sonday II, each student uses assessment data to select spelling patterns they commit to work on each week.  After selecting the pattern, students find words to develop their own spelling list.

Attaching the squirrel baffle...lots of failed attempts, but they figured it out!

Getting the Word Out!

Students decided to write and produce public service announcements to share about their school bird haven with all students on morning announcements

If you feed them
